Ortona South

The weather was wonderful when we arrived.  We quickly settled in and rode our bikes some here.  This is one of our favorite campgrounds.  It is well kept and right on the banks of the Okeechobee waterway, which runs from Fort Myers on the Gulf coast to Stuart on the Atlantic side, rising and lowering thru 5 sets of locks, and going thru Lake Okeechobee.  The Corps of Engineers has campgrounds at 3 of the locks, W. D. Franklin, Ortona, and Port St. Lucie.  There are lots of birds and other critters around.  We can see a large Bald Eagle nest in the distance on the other side of the canal.  There is a pair of Bald Eagles nesting there, and they can be seen soaring overhead.  Carol got a picture of one, and you can see the white head, but we need a better camera, to get good shots from such a distance.  While we were here, our insurance rep called and set up for us to take the motorhome in to have the fridge repaired.  I contacted North Trail RV and decided that I would get the part and install it myself, to save breaking camp and driving the motorhome 70 miles round trip.  If I had problems, then I could take the part in and have them install it.  The install was pretty easy, and we finally have our fridge back working on electricity.  Now we can really relax!

This view is from the locks, in the middle of the canal. This is the north loop in the campground, and we are in Site #25, which is right in the middle of this shot.
