We are spending October at Pride RV Resort in Maggie Valley. The colors arrived early this year. When we got here on the 7th, there was already good color on some of the hills in Jonathan Valley, which is actually where we are located, and the "Burning Bush" which is planted in the median thru the whole length of the valley was brilliant. Our granddaughter Rachel stayed with us several times during our stay. We went over to Smokemont Campground in the Smokies to visit Rick and Becky (Florida) and Connie and Ronnie (South Carolina) and we all went touring one day and hiked to the top of Clingman's Dome, and then enjoyed dinner and a campfire together. After they left Smokemont, Rick and Becky stayed here at Pride RV Resort for another week. Ronnie and Connie also came back up for a weekend, so the six of us went touring again. We drove up to Max Patch, a bald located near the Tennessee border, which afforded some great views and cool temps. We spent several days exploring the backroads in the area, which is one of our favorite pastimes. On one trip we were riding with Rick and Becky in their Dually, and according to the Garmin, we were only about a tenth of a mile from a road in the Smokies, but the road became less than we could manage, and we turned around and backtracked. You can check out the "What Road?" Photo Gallery for the rest of the story on this adventure. The weather turned cold this year and we were even treated to a light dusting of SNOW. We were exploring the backroads again, and when we passed the Cataloochie Ski Resort, they were "Making Snow". They opened the next day for skiers, which was the earliest that they have opened in their 40 year history. |
